Ok, goofiness aside, here is some good content:
Member interview by Karin:
Patrick Goguen – Holton # 1.27
Patrick is an interdisciplinary artist and jack of all trades previously employed as an art handler where he installed, packed, transported and handled art for galleries, museums and private clients. He is currently launching his own business in that same field, Holistic Art Support (holisticartsupport.com).
He came to A2-Allston because he wanted not just the access to tools but also a collaborative community. A2 has become his second home and the kind of place that, as he says, “you get out of it what you put in”.
His mold-making sculptural practice uses fancy plaster (Hydrostone) which can capture fine detail but is also strong enough to be used for exterior sculpture. You might have seen the “bronze” dog in the Holton lobby which is coated in a metal paint that works just like metal to reflect and refract light. This is an affordable way to create what looks like a metal sculpture.
He doesn’t have much time these days for his own artwork as, besides launching his business, he is in the throes of the last few weeks of preparation for the opening of Gallery at Asylum. He has been working on this labor of love for a year and a half. This gallery is a community focused endeavor and the goal is to have 6 shows/year with two curatorial tracks: Members and Visiting Artists. The first is a member-based, open call for group shows where members can submit for free (non-members fee will be $25). If you teach at A2, having work in the gallery will be a great way to promote classes.
The Visiting Artist shows will be by invitation for mid-career artists. This relationship with A2 will not be just about a show. Each artist will be invited to a 2-month residency which includes a complimentary membership and a requirement to teach something new and different at A2.
Gallery at Asylum’s first exhibit, ArtParty, will open on July 26 and run through mid-September. The following show and grand opening, will be member-driven and is titled “Cross Pollination”. Applications will be announced in the first week of July. The first visiting artist exhibit will open in December.
A2 members, if you haven’t already pitched in to help build out the Gallery space there is just a month before the first show and work still to be done…one more wall to be built and painted, pedestals to be finished and general cleaning. Feel free to chat with Patrick (gal…@artisansasylum.com) if you are able to lend a hand.
