Question for the Luthiers

As some of you know, I have a Yamaha FG200 acoustic guitar that I’m trying to clean up enough to sell for a reasonable price… It has some white stuff that I’m told is probably some sort of mildew on the fret board and a small bit on the lower block where the strings attach…

A wood working non-instrument maker has suggested scrubbing gently w/ Murphy’s Oil Soap and a piece of white Scotch Bright, then using some linseed oil on it. Does this seem like a reasonable approach?

Similarly, the case (looks like painted cardboard or something similar?) is kind of grubby, I probably can’t do much about the slightly rusty hardware, but any suggestions on what to use to clean it up as much as I can?

I have also ordered a new set of strings for it, and may need a hand in figuring out how to put them on and (especially) getting it in tune.
